maharishi’s long standing tradition of creating a new thematically relevant disruptive pattern each season continues this Spring Summer with DPM:Bonsai Python. Created to celebrate the Chinese lunar year of the snake the pattern takes it’s inspiration from the natural world, namely the disruptive patterns utilised by snakes and other reptiles for concealment.

Based on maharishi’s house pattern DPM:Bonsai Forest, it uses snake scales to create a disruptive pixelated version of that pattern’s heavenly clouds and bonsai tree motif’s. This speaks to the fact that as with all maharishi’s camouflage patterns DPM:Bonsai Python has been created as part of it’s ongoing mission to reclaim the symbolic value of camouflage from the military and to reinforce it’s true origins in nature and art.

Three colourways of this pattern have been created to date, DPM:Bonsai Python Woodland, Night and Urban. Clothing and accessories utilising this pattern can be found here.

As guest artist at maharishi, War Boutique presents the latest addition to its range of wearable protest art, following a tradition of politically expressive clothing from within British fashion houses.

The piece is an elegy to the many people killed and injured in recent peaceful protests throughout the world. The Striking Suit, through a series of coloured panels, indicates the escalating levels of trauma to vital and vulnerable areas on the body, when struck with a police baton. This ‘traffic-light’ system is used in training officers where and where not to strike a person.

Acting not only as a satirical aide-memoire to officers involved in the throws of civil protest, the Striking Suit serves also to remind us of the harsh realities of a so-called democratic society.

The Striking Suit will be released through the maharishi store and site on May Day and exhibited at ‘I PROTEST’, a show of artistic responses to protest at The Herbert Museum & Art Gallery in Coventry from the 16^th May.

The theme for maharishi’s Autumn Winter 2013 is based on the modern day Prepper,  a group who prepare for a future where our basic food and energy needs may not be provided by the state or private enterprise, following economic or societal collapse, a solar flare hitting the earth and wiping out electricity grids, a polar shift or anyone of a myriad of possible apocalyptic events.

maharishi’s camouflage DPM pattern this season is a photo real rendition of an English Oak forest infused with bright red edible berries, referencing the hi visibility colours included in many hunting patterns since several US states outlawed non high vis camo for hunting (as a result of so many fatal hunting accidents where hunters successfully hide from fellow hunters and get caught in the cross fire). With so much of the prey being colour blind, the orange and hi vis layer in the patterns is only visible to humans.

maharishi launch Spring Summer 13 this month, celebrating The Chinese Year of the Snake which starts on February 10.

The collection is entitled Memento Mori, and many aspects of the collection remind us of the inevitability of death.Two red dots, representing the snake’s bite, appear on t-shirt graphics and subtly within details from bar tacks and button holes to the colouring of maharishi’s 3 circular eyelet branding.

Seasonally maharishi offer a new disruptive pattern, this time its a version of the house camo pattern. Entitled DPM: Bonsai Python, the pattern is available in woodland and night colourways. The usual bonsai trees growing from heavenly clouds and other elements are infilled with a snakeskin texture look. Although in nature there are not typically any woodland patterned snakes, maharishi take this artistic license to reinforce the theory (expressed in detail within Hardy Blechman’s DPM encyclopedia) that camouflage was only developed thanks to the research of Abbot Thayer and other natural historians and the development of Picasso’s Cubism, which allowed artists to create more abstract renditions of nature.

Each year maharishi celebrates the Chinese lunar calendar with a limited edition clothing release. 2013 welcomes the Water Snake, and to commemorate this maharishi have produced a limited number of fitted MA-1 tour jackets in Organic Diamond Twill featuring hand work embroidery.

These jackets feature a hand embroidered snake patch on the front, an embroidered poised snake on the back with the words ‘maharishi’, ‘Momento Mori’ & ‘Year of the Snake’ in kanji.

Inspired by the Vietnam war era “Pleiku” tour jackets, these were much prized as souvenirs by GI’s serving in Vietnam and Korea.
