Kawanabe Kyōsai was regarded as one of the most imaginative master painter's of Edo Japan. Unlike his earlier counterparts, such as Hokusai and Hiroshige the artist's work bridged the elite with popular/working classes.

Artists in Ukiyo-e circles of the 19th century would attend Shogakai's (calligraphy parties) in which Kyōsai stood out for his pioneering caricature and technically brilliant, vivid paintings and illustrations. The artist's open-minded approach combined along with his proficiency in an array of styles conveyed the many views of this era.
