Maha Tailor Shop · Uniform, Souvenir & Cinema

Maha Tailor Shop is an imagined workshop rooted in the independent tailor shops of 1960s Vietnam.

These local businesses altered uniforms, reproduced clothing and made embroidered souvenirs for visiting servicemen. Their work brought standard military issue into contact with local fabrics, craftsmanship and individual expression.

Introduced for Spring/Summer 2021, the capsule develops this premise through Maharishi’s Pacifist Military Design philosophy. Uniforms become a starting point for adaptation: familiar pocket arrangements are reconfigured, military cloth is cut into kimono silhouettes, and hanten closures offer another approach to fastening utility garments.

The workshop’s specialisms include uniform reproduction and modification, small-batch camouflage printing and embroidered tour jackets. Reproductions of rare patterns, including ARVN/Purples and Monster Tiger, sit within an ongoing exploration of camouflage’s relationship with nature, art and personal expression.

MAHAPATCHCO. supplies the workshop’s badges, insignia and nametapes.

Its references extend from unit patches to anti-war imagery, music and contemporary art, drawing on the souvenir and entertainer jackets through which wearers recorded their travels and affiliations.

The workshop’s cinematic offshoot explores military clothing through its life on screen.

For Autumn/Winter 2026, the Travis M65 revisits the field jacket worn by Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (1976). Japanese cotton sateen recreates the character of period military cloth, while a detachable camouflage fleece liner and internal carry straps add contemporary utility.

The King Kong sleeve patch and “We Are The People” pin badge retain the film reference’s most recognisable details, connecting uniform, costume and personal identity.

East/West

The Tailor Shop’s imagined journey has expanded beyond Vietnam, taking in Tibet, the Himalayas, Northern Thailand, Alaska and Okinawa. Across these settings, Maharishi explores how local dress and craft can transform military clothing.

Reproduction fabrics sit alongside adapted surplus garments, continuing Maharishi’s practice of giving existing materials a renewed purpose.

Maharishi Lifetime Repair Service

The Maharishi Lifetime Repair Guarantee service is designed to extend the functional life of Maharishi garments.

The program provides repair work carried out in the Maha Tailor Shop by trained staff, using appropriate materials to maintain the integrity of the original garment. Repairs range from minor work, such as replacing buttons or Snocords®, to more complex restoration including patching and heavy-duty zips.

Personalised Nametapes

Continue the workshop’s tradition of making uniforms personal with a custom nametape, hand-machine embroidered to order.

Designed to replace the removable hook-and-loop nametapes on compatible Maharishi garments, the service is available in-store. Ask our store team for details.
